I've been at my new job for a good two weeks now. I work at the Mandara Spa as their spa concierge supervisor. It nothing too fancy and its alot of work and stress but I'm glad that i finally have a job that pays enough to put food on my table and a roof above my head every month and that it has some sort of advancement.

The company that I work for recently had a major organizational change and their main managers and regular staff quit and left the company in junk. So the regional vice president had to fly down to honolulu to take over and lead. Hence, new people were employed and the manager had to fly down from big island to take care of things. its been really busy because the staff is a little unreliable. Like I had a girl call in the other day to say that she wasn't coming in today or tomorrow or... ever! and just like that, she was gone. No commitments, no i'm sorry, nothing... Ploooshh, gone! so we're still pretty short handed and in a mess and i have a lot of paperwork to do everyday.

Nonetheless, its a job. nothing full time and definately not something permanent. and its so hard giving 5 star quality when your understaffed, stressed and underpaid. oh well..

if nothing changes, i should be home in november.

a heated debate over dinner at menotti last night and after a while i tuned out because i figured that there wouldn't be an end to the argument. i thought about it a lil bit more when i got back home and i guess this is what i had to say but i didn't get a chance to.

i stand by what i said about this whole poaching people before the lifting of the moratorium issue, and i still ask "what's the big deal?" because i still don't think its a big deal. not enough for me to be passionately upset about it. i acknowledge that it is wrong when firms don't stick to the moratorium and lead students to believe that they are applying for pupilage on a level playing field basis. i acknowledge that it is wrong for firms to pressure students into giving them replies before the moratorium is up.

but consider also that the moratorium isn't imposed upon the firms, it is imposed upon the students, who are obliged not to apply before the moratorium is lifted. consider also that if one is willing to be less rigid in mindset, is the internship not just a long drawn form of an interview where the intern is continually assessed before the boss decides whether he/she should be offered a position or not? much like the clerkship interview process which was conducted before the moratorium was lifted as well. Depending on how you look at it, an one month interview process could be even more onerous than that one off interview.

and i say that that is just the way the world works because the best firms want the best brains, and you say that its such a corporate lawyer thing to say. and i wonder, why i'm being chucked into the "corporate lawyer" category just because i've chosen not to practice in the litigation arena, for reasons completely unrelated to the type of work i'm doing, but for the reason that i want to travel and corporate law gives me more mobility. so no, my friend, i'm not saying that it's how the world works because i've chosen to practice corporate law.

i'm saying that it is how the world works because that's the truth innit? By accepting that that is how the world works, doesn't mean that I'm accepting that there is nothing wrong with it or that i'm being mediocre as thegreatsze would say. it is merely because i feel that not every battle in life has to be fought with guns-a-blazing till blood is shed. you can do little things in little ways to change the system and the way things work, and really, it might be more effective than getting angry at the system that you cannot change with the snap of your fingers. sometimes not every battle has to even be fought because the system can be beaten in other ways. choose your battles wisely, that's what i have to constantly remind myself, because as you all already know, i have little tolerance for many things. but yea, choose your battles wisely, otherwise at the end of the day, you might find yourself tired and drained, with little change effected.
